outtathinairstudio Do you get royalties for Strawberry Shortcake or Care Bears? I don't and I never did. I signed a WORK for HIRE agreement when I began my job at American Greetings. Back in the 70s. As far as I know no one on staff got royalties. Independent freelancers sometimes did. I supplement my Social Security with what I make from my art. When my husband died in 2018 after a long and horrific period I lost most of my Retirement money and was in debt. I relaunched my studio under Outta Thin Air. I am now out of debt and was able to build a #TinyStudio. I appreciate all the patrons have purchase my art merch. My personal selling site outtathinairstudio.com #QAndASeries My plan is to add to this series as the questions continue to pop up.ALT

Muriel Fahrion, the creator of Strawberry Shortcake and Care Bears, was under a work for hire contract when she created them and as a result has received no residuals over the last 40+ years. If you like either of those properties, consider purchasing something from her website. She has art and cute jewelry!

Yet another example of capitalism not rewarding the actual artist/inventor/producer of a particular thing. If you want to get ahead in this system, it’s not about hard work or innovation; it’s about owning capital.

Collage and zine style poster depicting nature scenes and photos from a campsite, including a treehouse with what appears to be a ramp. The following info is on the poster, though more description will be outside of the alt text. Summer's End Youth Empowerment Conference Fletcher, Vermont /Ndakinna/Abenaki land ***August 12th-18th *** For ages 16-28 Pay what you can but $300 suggested (many people come for free!) Summersendcon.weebly.com (note: the website might be the incorrect dates at the moment - the real dates are 12th-18th as stated in this post and poster) Summersendconference@gmail.com The registration form is on our website.ALT
Poster with a collage of food in the background. Text reads, "food needed" in all caps. Body text: "A youth-led, consensus-based week long youth empowerment conference is taking place from the 12th to 18th outside Burlington, VT. We are reliant on donations from farms, businesses, and conferees alike and serve people with a wide variety of dietary needs and wants. We have people driving from all directions who can pick up donations. Anything is helpful! If there's any excess, we will find someone to send it home with! Contact SummersEndConference@gmail.com if you can help." QR codes are also included. On the left is a QR code which goes to an email template to notify them about donations. The one on the right goes to their website.ALT

Hey! An event I collaged up these posters for. If you know anyone who would be interested in this either as an attendee or a food donor, drop us a line! The QR code for email (bottom left, second poster) includes an example template for donation notification if writing an email makes you anxious.

The conference has been going on since the 80s in its week long format and in recent years we’ve had to scale back a fair bit because of dwindling numbers and finances. Last year we numbered around 20 people at peak and a lot of us (including me) are aging out this year.

I have never felt more at home in my queer disabled body with my wacky neurotypes than I have at Summer’s End. I was a girl guide as a kid and it’s been a lot for me to have an opportunity to access nature in a way that I didn’t think I would get to again because of who I am and how I need to move throughout the world. I feel Crip Camp about it. I feel run away to the woods to be braless with tranarchists and artists and zinesters and punks and Jewish farmers about it. I’m running a workshop this year where we make buttons. We have access to canoes! We have a community of people who want to help each other and feel empowered by each other. Sometimes therapy is not enough, sometimes you need to feel community and get to know yourself in the woods for a week. It’s a little pocket of belonging that I wish everyone had. And I hope it keeps going for many many years down the line, long after everyone in it now is gone, when it has become something the youth of the future want it to be. There is no higher body making this conference happen. It’s all us. And we can’t keep it going without outreach help.

The fee is a sliding scale and many people come for free. If anything here is hard to read, feel free to click for the alt text.

I also encourage folks ask any questions you feel like!

As for COVID precautions, proof of vax is required and negative rapid test (we can provide those). The event is mostly outdoors but we encourage people to bring HEPA purifiers if you can fit it in your luggage for the indoor parts. (I’ll be bringing one personally, but mine isn’t graded very high and idk which building I’ll be sleeping in.) Camping is encouraged but we have cabins!

tl;dr if you’re 16-28 and want to be in the woods on Abenaki land for a bit have I got the thing for you!!

so i’m getting evicted because the landlord is selling the place and i’ve found a new place to live but it’s all very sudden and expensive. i need to get the place professionally cleaned as well because i can’t really do all of it with my chronic illness and if anyone has anything to spare i’d really appreciate some help. no obligation but if you’ve enjoyed my posts and you’re feeling generous it would mean the world to me

defectivegembrain:

Actually while I’m remembering to say this, happy disability pride month to all special ed kids and former special ed kids! It can be such an alienating experience, and involve a lot of infantilisation and denial of freedom, and society stereotypes special ed to hell and back. We deserve to be taken seriously and not stigmatised for needing different things from most people within the education system.

as my own direct immediate list of game grievances i hate that stardew valley expects you to side against a wheelchair user who is upset that he was moved without his consent. i hate that the mass effect trilogy gives you visible scarring as a direct result of choosing mean dialogue and heals it if you’re nice. i hate that the vampire the masquerade ttrpg has a monstrous player class that can appear as horrible vampiric monsters or as visibly disabled people and both of these appearances are mechanically the same. i hate that dark souls games have a difficulty level implemented in a way that cannot be adjusted for disability. i hate that i can play as a mermaid or a werewolf or a horse in the sims games but can’t use a wheelchair. i hate that the ace attorney games have so much flashing and not all of the games can disable it. i hate that disability is constantly something that happens to teach a lesson, i hate that disability is something that happens as a punishment, i hate that disability is either compensated perfectly with no drawbacks or something that is endlessly sought to be cured. i hate that no character customization will ever include the mobility aids i use, that the player avatars that represent me will never look like me. i am so goddamn annoyed and so goddamn tired.

WARNING TO NORTH CAROLINIANS

our chiggers now carry TYPHUS

The symptoms to look out for are fever, rash, headache, body aches, swollen lymph nodes, general GI symptoms and a crusty nasty looking area around the bite. Not all of these symptoms may be present but if you were bitten by a chigger in North Carolina and you don’t feel well, go to the doctor. Antibiotics can clear it right up but if left untreated, the fatality rate can be 40% for some strains.

Here’s a map of the places tested and the places where chiggers were found to be infected:

image

(Also, because I saw this in the notes, typhoid and typhus are radically different diseases. Typhoid is caused by salmonella and usually transferred through contaminated food and water while typhus is caused by several different bacteria and typically transferred by insect bite.)

Are you fucking kidding me

Warning for non North Carolinians. Stay off North Carolina beaches!

The beaches are the only part of the state that seems safe LMFAO

nerianasims:

“Think of the two major possibilities here: Either the studios owe untold millions to their talents and paying it out will decimate their stock prices, or they owe so little because there really is no money in streaming and the bubble of their entire 21st century business model will burst in spectacular fashion. And make no mistake: this is a bubble. This is the inevitable climax of a stockholder-driven hunger for infinite growth, despite the fact that, by design, such a thing cannot and should not exist. The infection of Wall Street has overwhelmed the entertainment industry beyond repair, leading to cultural vandals like David Zaslav to be appointed with the callous duty of strip-mining decades’ of artistic beauty for pennies of tax write-offs. The past and future are frivolous in comparison to the short-term demands that the line keep going up.”

palipunk:

Shouldn’t be a controversial opinion but even homophobic Palestinians don’t deserve to be carpet bombed, have their homes destroyed, be thrown into jail, tortured, and be at the mercy of a settler colonial state that seeks to get rid of them regardless of orientation - how am I seeing “they should only genocide the homophobic Palestinians” and “homophobic Palestinians deserve what’s coming to them” from white queers who say they’re against the actions of the state of israel? You’re not pro palestine, you’re a homonationalist. Lgbt Palestinians don’t want you.

Two Things

1) I’m stoked as hell for UPS to do what they gotta do for better labor conditions and I support them unconditionally

2) I just remembered I should buy a bunch of extra food for my bunny early so I don’t run out in case of/during a strike!!!!!!!

Therefore I am posting this in case you also need to buy a bunch of something that is usually delivered by UPS and is time sensitive pre- Aug 1, 2023. Here is your official reminder.

xoxo

we need to free the nipple so bad im so serious we should be so far past the point where girl children are told they have to keep their shirt on while their brothers and cousins get to run around shirtless or women shamed for breastfeeding or trans men needing top surgery to go outside shirtless without getting judged at best and arrested at worst or girls getting taken out of class for not wearing a bra like this should be a priority

Hey my sister’s favorite bookstore burned down on the 4th of July and they lost their entire inventory. The place is owned by a really sweet Asian lady in Chinatown and they hosted all sorts of really good and fun events. She asked me to pass this on and forward it if anyone is willing to pitch in to help restore it ^^

No pressure regardless, but felt I’d pass it on cause damn that’s so unfortunate.

solar-sunnyside-up:

When I say I am not waiting for revolution, I mean Im planting things secretly at bus stops, and shoveling snow out of the way of crosswalks.

I mean it in a way where neighbors are stocking community fridges and harvesting in community gardens. Little libraries and strangers giving you shoes bc they couldnt return them. I mean ppl swapping stuff or loaning it out to neighbors theyve just met.

I mean it in a way where a friend who can sew asks me to mend something and a week late brings me cookies as thanks. I mean it in the way a friend makes a playlist for you and it truly brighten your day.

These tiny acts of defiance against cruelty and profit are their own  revolutions. And they catch like kindling, small going at first you might not even know that flames there. Than suddenly all at once catching, burning in the darkness of the night.
